New European Commission data reveals a 500% gap between official and real-world CO₂ emissions from plug-in hybrids in 2024, reigniting concerns over emissions testing and regulatory concessions.
Plug-in hybrid vehicles ki baat karein so ek baar phir se yeh technology critism ke under aa gayi hai. And again, iska main reason hai in vehicles ke controversial fuel consumption or CO2 emissions figures, jo reportedly real-world driving conditions ko bilkul bhi reflect nahi karte hai. Transport & Environment association ka bhi yahi kehna hai, once again, after sharing the latest data from the European Commission. Basically, jo official figures manufacturers ki taraf se report kiye jaate hai, woh actual road conditions mein PHEVs ke fuel consumption or emissions ko accurately represent nahi karte hai. And yeh PHEV cars ke liye ek worrying fact ko highlight karta hai, because 2024 mein registered or analyzed ki gayi more than 200,000 new plug-in hybrid cars ke data mein jo latest full year available data hai, declared WLTP emissions or real-world emissions ke between 500 percent ka difference dekha gaya hai. It means officially claimed emissions figures or actual road conditions mein vehicles se produce hone wale emissions ke between gap dekha jaa sakta hai.
This is how the difference between official and real world emissions numbers for PHEVs has grown over time.
This is how the difference between official and real world emissions numbers for PHEVs has grown over time.
The gap between plug-in hybrids is expanding We all know ki PHEVs ke case mein jo official figures diye jaate hai, woh real-world usage mein kaafi different ho sakte hai. So let's tak Spain mein 2025 ke best selling PHEV, the BYD Seal U DM-i, as an example, just to take remind ourselves what we are actually talking sbout. Is SUV ka average WLTP fuel consuption sirf 0.4 litres per 100 km claim kiya gaya hai, while its declared CO2 emissions are a mere 9 grams per kilometre. Abb European Environment Agency (EEA) ke shared kiye gaye CO2 emissions ke data ko dekhein, so 2024 ke PHEV data ka use karte hue sabse pehle yeh notice kar payenge that these vehicles ka WLTP consumption 24.20 g/km record kiya gaya tha. However, jab real world emissions results ki baat karein, so yahan par figure kaafi zyada hai, at 145.27 g/km. Matlab real-world emissions WLTP figure se 500.23 percent zyada hai, which means ki yeh figure almost six times higher hai.
"Plug-in hybrids ki baat karein so these are considered to be one of the biggest greenwashing schemes in the automotive industry, because inhe ek eco-friendly solution ke form par market kiya jaata hai, but in reality iska environmental impact kaafi serious ho sakta hai. Consumers ke liye bhi yeh ek real rip-off represent karte hai, because they can end up paying much more for fuel than what they had initially expected. Manufacturers ki taraf se EU se demand ki jaa rahi hai that it should turn a blind eye so that they can delay their investment in electric cars. Utility factors ko iss purpose ke liye design kiya gaya tha ki official emissions figures or real world emissions ke beech ka difference match kiya jaa sake. Europe agar China ke saath electric vehicle market mein compete karne ke apne chances ko maintain karna chahta hai, so it must resist any attempts to weaken these utility factors." — Isabell Buschel, Director of T&E in Spain
T&E ke according prepare kiye gaya chart, jo aap upar dekh sakte hai, so yeh sirf figures ki wajah se revealing nahi hai, but real or official emissions figures ke between ka gap bhi years tak continuously widen hota hua dekha jaa sakta hai. 2021 mein real or official emissions ke beech ka difference 252.09 percent tha, whereas 2024 mein, jaise humne bataya, yeh gap 500.23 percent zyada ho gaya tha. It means overall is duration mein dono emissions figures ke beech ka difference 248.14 percentage points se increase hua hai. Official emissions figures ko agar dekha jaaye and 2023 or 2024 ke between ka difference compare karein, so on papaer emissions 28 se reduce ho kar 24 g of CO2/km par aa gaye hai, which is around a 15 percent decrease. However, real world emissions measurements jo EEA ne past four years mein collect kiye hai, unke according actual emissions figures every year 5 percent increase hue hai. That means manufacturers jo claim kar rahe hai or real world data mein jo difference dekha jaa raha hai, it contradicts what the manufacturers are claiming.
This represents the discrepancy between PHEVs official and actual emissions in 2024.
Brands are seeking more concessions for PHEVs Plug-in hybrid technology ki baat karein so this comes at a very curcial time, because this technology already accounts for 9.8 percent of new car sales in the European Union, according to the data from the first half of 2025. Abh CO2 emissions standards for passenger cars ko revise karne ke liye negotiations bhi 12 Ocober ko reopen hone wali hai. Manufacturers ne recently ek first victory achieve ki hai, so yahan par most important development yeh raha that PHEVs ko after 2035 bhi sell karne ke liye exceptions mein include kiya gaya hai. 2035 woh date hai jiske baad Europe mein combustion engine wale kisi bhi vehicle ki sale ko ban kar diya gaya tha. But PHEVs ko iss exception mein include kiye jaane ke baad manufacturers abb in vehicles ko 2035 ke baad bhi market mein continue kar sakenge. EU ko car manufacturers ke attempts ko reject karna chahiye, jo official or real world emissions ke beech ke gap ko reduce karne ke liye banaye gaye rules ko weaken karne ki try kar rahe hai. T&E ka believe hai ki plug-in hybrids ko climate targets achieve karne mein falsely count karne se bhi prevent kiya jaana chahiye, so that officially reported emissions or actual emissions ke beech ka difference or zyada increase na ho. Brands ki baat karein so yeh continuously Europe par pressure bana rahe hai, organization ke according, so that 2027 ke liye scheduled regulations update ko cancel kiya jaa sake. Yeh update actually real-world emissions or official emissions ke between jo gap hai, usse reduce karne ka work karega. That's the reason brands ko more CO2 emissions homologate karne padege, and consequently, unke overall emission figures bhi worsen ho sakte hai. Iska direct impact unke environmental objectives ko meet karne padega, especially in the region, jahan manufacturers ko stricter emission targets ko comply karna hota hai. Agar aap above mention table ko dekhenge, so aap notice kar payenge that other electrified combustion technologies ke saath jo differences hai, woh kaafi high hai and even PHEVs ke comparison mein bhi zyada dekhe jaa sakte hai. Gasoline hybrids mein 476 percent ka difference dekha gaya hai, while diesel hybrids ki baat karein so yeh difference 817 percent tak pahunch jaata hai. However, yahan par involved vehicles ki number kaafi smaller hai, sna European regulations ki baat karein so 2035 ke baad in rules mein kisi bhi changes ya in vehicles ki continued sale ko lekar at present koi provision nahi diya gaya hai.
